Honouring Our Elders – International Day of Older Persons
Every year on 1 October, the world pauses to recognise the invaluable role that older persons play in our families, communities, and society. The International Day of the Elderly, proclaimed by the United Nations, reminds us not only to celebrate longevity but also to reflect on the dignity, care, and respect our elders deserve.
At the SAVF, we walk alongside thousands of elderly South Africans every day – providing care, support, and companionship in residential facilities, service centres, and through community outreach. We see first-hand the stories, wisdom, and resilience carried by our older persons. They are the keepers of history, the givers of wisdom, and the anchors of families.
Why this day matters
Ageing is not just about growing old – it is about growth, legacy, and contribution. Today’s elders are yesterday’s teachers, builders, nurses, parents, and leaders. Yet many face loneliness, financial challenges, or health struggles. This day reminds us all to advocate for their rights, provide quality care, and create spaces where they can thrive with dignity.
SAVF’s Commitment to the Elderly
For over a century, the SAVF has been dedicated to caring for older persons across South Africa. Our services go beyond physical care – we strive to build communities of belonging, where every elderly person feels valued and respected. From frail care facilities and assisted living to social services and nutritional support, our mission is to enrich lives and bring hope.
How you can make a difference
Spend time: Visit an elderly relative, neighbour, or friend – your time is the most precious gift.
Support initiatives: Volunteer at an SAVF facility or contribute to projects that uplift the elderly.
Raise awareness: Use your voice to challenge ageism and advocate for policies that protect the rights of older persons.
Give with heart: Donations, whether in time, resources, or financial support, help us extend our reach to those most in need.
Celebrating Life, Honouring Legacy
On this International Day of the Elderly, we at the SAVF invite you to join us in celebrating the lives of older persons across South Africa. Let us ensure they are not only remembered today but cherished every day.
After all, caring for our elders is not a duty – it is a privilege.
🌿 Because every life matters, every story counts, and every elder deserves dignity. 🌿
